    Celebrating the 4th

Whether you were born in the US or not it’s quite common to know that American’s go a little crazy over the 4th of July to celebrate the Declaration of Independence and their official separation from the British Empire.  You may also know it as the time for a grand display of fireworks, boating, and cook outs.  If you aren’t sure when or where to go for this 4th of July here are some suggestions to help narrow down your options:

    Fireworks

Probably one of the most common events that are sought out is firework displays.  Champaign puts on a great show and on July 4th, 2016 at 9:15pm you can see the Fireworks at University of Illinois near State Farm Center.  Other fireworks that will be around Champaign if you can’t make those I would recommend Rantoul, Mahomet, or Sibley.  All of the links provided offer directions and even ratings on the firework displays as well as give information on other events that go on!  And if you are really looking to get out of the area I recommend heading on up to Chicago where fireworks are displayed every Wednesday (9:30pm) and Saturday (10:15pm) from May 28 through September 3, 2016 - plus April 23 at Navy Pier!

    Cook Out

If you have access to a grill pull out your red, white, and blue apron and get ready to flip some burgers!  Food is the best way to bring people together and with recipes like ones found on Pinterest you can find a plethora of 4th of July themed drinks and snacks to share!  Or maybe make something special for yourself!

    Boating

If you are looking to get out on the water there are a few lakes in central and southern Illinois that can help satisfy your need.  The first is Lake Shelbyville, which is located in Shelbyville, IL about an hour and a half away from Champaign.  Lake Sara is another great option in southern Illinois.  You can check out their page here about the Bluegill Marina to get more information as well as their contact information!  Clinton Lake is my third suggestion.  Clinton Lake is known for their trails around the lake for equestrian as well as hunting, however don't let that take away from all the water acdtivities you can get involved in, especially if you know someone who owns a sailboat, which is very popular at this lake.  You can find more information about Clinton Lake here!

    Beach

I’m sure it’s already plainly obvious to you that Illinois isn’t exactly located near any beaches, at least nothing as convenient as the corn fields that seem to occupy a majority of the state.  If you haven’t noticed the corn fields and excessive farm land go 10 minute north or south of campus and you’ll understand.  But for most it’s plainly obvious that in order to touch sand you have to drive north to Chicago or further northeast to Michigan City, Indiana.  For living in Illinois for 24 years and making family vacations to Michigan City for 22 years I recommend venturing there if you are searching for a nice beach to relax at.

    Parade

Another great event to attend for the 4th of July would be Champaign-Urbana’s parade.  I remember being in the parade when I was younger as well as sitting alongside the street earnestly waiting for candy to be tossed out.

    Relax

When in doubt I recommend taking the time to just relax during this holiday.  Whether that means reclining in your chair and taking a nap over the long weekend or going out with friends just enjoy the break.  If you are going to hang around the apartment consider spicing things up and getting some festive lights like these here or finding some extra red white and blue pillows or a nice blanket to bring the spirit of the 4th into your living space.
