    Safety Tips for College Students

Overall, UIUC is a very safe campus. However, it is always good, no matter how safe the area, to be aware of your surroundings and take all necessary precautions to keep yourself safe! Here are our top safety tips for college students.

    Get to Know Campus

Whether it’s your fourth year on campus or your first, getting to know the area should be a priority of yours. Things on campus change quickly, so make sure that you are staying on top of changes and constantly learning about the campus and surrounding areas.

Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings

If you think that something seems a little sketchy or off, listen to your instincts and report it. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Always be aware of the things that are going on around you.

    Don’t walk alone at night

Even in the safest areas, it is best to always walk with someone at night. If you are a student at the University of Illinois you have access to SafeWalks or SafeRides. The numbers for both of these services can be found on the back of your Illinois iCard. If you call SafeWalks, a member of the student patrol will come to you and walk with you wherever you need to go. SafeRides is similar to a bus system that will pick you up wherever you are and take you where you need to go.

    Lock your doors

Make sure that you are locking your doors when you leave your apartment, but also make it a habit to lock your doors when you are home as well.

Don’t let people in your apartment building that do not live there

Many JSM apartment buildings feature a secure entry, meaning that only people that have access to the building are residents. If there are guests in the building, they should be accompanied by the individual who is a resident of the building. In order to keep the whole community safe, it is best not to let anyone into the building who does not live there.
