How to Tackle Long Distance Apartment Hunting

Finding an apartment when you are not able to physically check out the location can be difficult. You want to make sure that you know what you are getting before you sign a lease. Here are our top tips for tackling long distance apartment hunting.

    Check out Google Maps

Take a look at the area you are moving to and decide what you need to be closest to. For example, if you are an engineering student, you may want to be near the engineering quad so that you don’t have to travel too far to get to class. Maybe it’s important to you to be near lots of restaurants and shopping, so you want to live on or near Green Street. Taking a look at a map can help you get a better idea of where to begin your long distance apartment search.

Take a Look at Photos and Videos

Since you most likely won’t be able to see the apartment in person, you’ll want to make sure that you take a look at all of the photos and videos. JSM has photos of our units as well as many apartment overview videos (and the list of available overviews is growing everyday!) so you can see exactly what the unit looks like. JSM also features “sneak peeks” of all of our properties to give prospective tenants an idea of the surrounding areas of each of our locations. Head over to the JSM YouTube channel to see even more video content!

    Do a FaceTime Tour

Did you know JSM offers FaceTime tours? If you are unable to view an apartment in person you can set up an appointment to tour JSM apartments via FaceTime! You just provide us with your apple ID and one of our leasing agents will call you from inside of the unit you wish to view. Pictures and videos do help a lot, but a real-time video tour with an experienced leasing agent can really help you see what you’re signing for.

JSM would love to help you with every step of your long distance apartment hunting! Give our office a call at 217-359-6108 if you have any questions. Happy hunting!
